Back to the Psalms

January 27, 2008 at 4:19 pm (Oneshots, Psalmfiction)

Posted a new oneshot today, sort of. Got around to finishing my Psalmfic about Edmund set to Psalm 121, but instead of leaving it as its own piece, I’m using it to start off my Psalmfiction collection. I figure that since I’ve got a few ideas bouncing around in my head, hardly any of which are remotely associated to each other, I might as well stick them all into one big collection of stuff rather than leave them as individual oneshots. *shrug* S’pose we’ll see how good an idea that was once I get going with it. Anyway, here’s the link:

First addition: Psalm 121 and Edmund’s thoughts as he looks upon the massive mountains of Aslan’s country near the end of VDT.

Little by Little

January 22, 2008 at 10:45 pm (General Updates, Philia Updates)

So I’m slowly making progress on my LB fic, which I’m going to stop referring to as ‘my LB fic’ and give it the proper title I’ve had for it for months now anyway: Philia. Boy have I got plans for this one… gonna be relying heavily on bits of The Four Loves for certain sections of it, I think. The only problem is that it’s REALLY slow work right now, thanks to all the busy-ness of school and still trying to get these articles written and beta work and all sorts of other fun stuff. At least it’s getting written, though. After more than a YEAR of bouncing around in my head and growing and developing and planning and other such stuff it’s FINALLY getting out on paper. And after presenting what little I had at the writing group in The Lion’s Call chat room on Monday, it seems to be going over well. Of course, there were only a few there, so that’s not saying much, but it’s certainly encouraging.

Speaking of Philia, I’ve noticed something. Each author has a certain character or type of character they feel most comfortable with, and it shows. I think I’ve finally found mine: Tirian. I find that odd, as I thought I’d have an easier time writing Jewel, as I see him as the character most like me, but that actually makes it a bit difficult: it’s hard for me to write Jewel as Jewel and not as me, if that makes sense. Tirian’s a nice middle-of-the-road: enough like me that I can write him easily enough, but far enough removed that I can separate myself from him… again, if that makes sense. He’s defined enough that I really have something to work with, but there’s enough left open about him that I have a little wiggle room when writing him as well. He comes very naturally, which is perhaps odd as hardly anything is written about him. Ah well, maybe it’s a good thing: there’s not enough about Tirian out there in my humble opinion. Maybe I’m supposed to change that. ;)

So, let’s hear it for Tirian as I continue to pound out the first chapter bit by bit… Tirian’s very cute as a little prince, I must admit. It’s very different writing him like that when I’m used to writing him actually DURING LB, but it’s a nice one. Can’t wait to write Jewel as a colt in, though. :P

Spreading Out a Bit

January 12, 2008 at 4:39 pm (General Updates)

All right, so while I haven’t got anything major done, I’ve been getting various bits and pieces of things done here and there throughout the week. Still trying to mainly focus on articles, but I take writing inspiration when it comes, and it popped up quite often this week. I did get a fair amound done on one of my three articles that needs to be written, which is a good thing, so that’ll hopefully be done soon.

I also got a start on my latest Psalmfic idea. While trying not to give too much away, I will say it concerns Edmund, and I’ve set it near the very end of Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It involves a very beautiful Psalm that (at least in my experience) gets used very often, so I hope it’ll go over well.

Then the other day I FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY got a start on my LB fic. I’m ecstatic about that: it’s the first idea I ever had for fanfiction, and it’s been bouncing around in my head for more than a year now. It’s had plenty of time to grow and develop and change and shift… and now I’ve got a whopping two paragraphs of it on paper! :P Still, it’s a start, and compared to the very messy opening I drafted way back when, I’m very satisfied. Boy I’ve come a long way since then… even some of my earlier fics make me cringe at times. ;)

Also I’m trying to find the time to beta a chapter for a friend of mine, so things are going slowly, but at least steadily. That’s a good thing. And I’ve been asked several times lately when I’m going to update RoKM, so I suppose I’d better get to that sooner or later too. Boy I’m busy writing wise…. but I like it that way. :)

A New Year of Writing

January 5, 2008 at 4:27 pm (General Updates)

Whew! Few days into the new year and I’m finally getting around to doing this. Few things I wanted to cover in here, so… here goes!

First off, I was surprised at the response to my Christmas piece. I was really nervous posting it, concerning the subject matter, but it went over really well: it’s my most reviewed piece to date. And it’s only one chapter! I’m so glad I wrote it, and it taught me a valuable lesson as well: to not be afraid to take a risk like that. Though I love seeing pieces that entwine faith and the Chronicles, I was a bit nervous to do it as… obviously as I did. But it worked, it paid off, and I’m happy it did.

Secondly, I’ve had another Psalmfic idea pop into my head, thanks to my vast collection of music that was added to these past few days. Don’t want to say too much here at the moment, but it concerns Edmund and where he finds his strength, set to what I think’s probably one of the more often-quoted Psalms. I’m really looking forward to writing it, but I’m afraid that’s going to have to wait, due to…

Item number three! I’ve really got to get these articles I’m supposed to write for the Lion’s Call written. They’ve been on my plate for a while now, and I should at least get a good part of it done before I go back to fanfic-ing. I’ve also got a friend waiting on a beta of mine, so it may be a while before anything fiction-wise comes out of me. Don’t worry, though, I’m still writing my hooves… er, hands off, so stick around, stay tuned, and we’ll see where I go from here together. It’s a new year, and I’m rarin’ to get writin’!

Merry Christmas!

December 22, 2007 at 4:01 pm (Oneshots)

Three days until Christmas! And as such, I didn’t have a whole lotta time to finish my Christmas fic. So I sat myself down and finished it up today. Not entirely sure what I think off the finished product… I feel like I was taking a big risk with this one. But regardless, I’m glad the plot bunny came along, and I’m glad I wrote it. So, here’s the link, and have a very merry Christmas!

Title: Reason for the Season
Rating: K
Summary: Tirian and Lucy discuss a bit about Christmas. Set after The Last Battle.

And the Results are In…

December 18, 2007 at 9:26 am (General Updates)

I mentioned several posts back the Lion Awards, the annual fanfiction awards that The Lion’s Call does. Several of my fics were apparently deemed worthy of nomination, as I found myself up for a fair few. Last night, the winners were announced, and at the end of the night, I walked away with two.

I’m an award winning fanfic author now! I feel all special. :)

The two I ended up with were the Stable Door Award for Best Use of Scripture, and the Jackdaw Award, for Funniest fic of the Year. Stable Door went to my fic Your Servant is Calling, which I was really happy about, considering it’s a personal favorite among the fics I’ve written, and the Jackdaw went to Deplorable Sue, which I had a blast writing, even though it’s an obvious deviance from my usual style.

All in all, I was happy with the results. The winners of the other ten awards were QUITE deserving, and I felt good that I was among such great fanfic authors. Results should be up on The Lion’s Call soon enough, and I’ll post a link as soon as I can.

Catching up and Cleaning House

December 14, 2007 at 3:57 pm (General Updates)

WHEW! Another term of college under my belt. And now that I’m on break and don’t have classes to deal with for a while, I can attempt to get some stuff done as far as my writing is concerned. Of course, I’ve got a few things to take care of as far as my Lion’s Call duties go… stay tuned over there for hopefully a few new articles in the near future. But I’m also trying to get work done on this Christmas piece of mine… want to get it out before the day itself comes, after all. DOH, and I’ve got a couple things I need to beta too, don’t I? Boy, the life of a writer is a busy one. Too many words bouncing around in my head that want to come out! At least I’ve got a lot to work on… I can bounce around from piece to piece depending on what I feel like writing. Of course, that means there’s the possibility it could be a while before I get anything DONE, which I’m not really wanting to do, but I suppose only time will tell. (Boy I say that a lot.)

Anyway, so that’s what’s up in my writing life these days. Trying to find a balance between my fics and my scholarly articles for TLC, but they’ll all get done in time. Until then, I’ll just keep writing!

Wow it’s been a while…

December 9, 2007 at 4:38 pm (General Updates, Thoughts and Ideas)

Hoo boy, where to start? NaNoWriMo kinda was a bust, I only got up to about 21,000 words. Still, that’s more than I’ve ever written before, and I learned a lot about myself, my writing, and just writing in general, so it was a good experience.

Since then, I’ve had an explosion of ideas that I’ve started to record in a handy-dandy little notebook I’ve taken to carrying around with me. It’s a really nice one, but it didn’t come cheap. Kinda did that on purpose, because that way I’d feel obligated to write in it. :P I’m also trying to write a little bit everyday, whether it’s fiction, my thoughts for the day, or whatever. Just to get into the habit of doing it.

And on that note, I’ve started work on a short piece that I’m hoping to get out there before Christmas, as it is a holiday-themed Narnian piece. I like what I’ve got done so far, and I’m hoping the overall effect will achieve what I want it to. I’d rather not go into too many details, though, so stay tuned and maybe you’ll find out before too terribly long. Until then!

After Day Three of NaNoWriMo…

November 4, 2007 at 10:33 am (Uncategorized)

…I’m still keeping up. I’ve done at least 1,667 words a day, which is what I need to do, so that’s a good thing. Word count stands at 5,076 as of last night… tenth of the way there. Still don’t know exactly where my plot is going, but I have a general idea, at least. And it features a unicorn!

What did I get myself into?

October 29, 2007 at 5:18 pm (Uncategorized)

Oh boy, now I’ve gone and done it. This is gonna have some interesting consequences. I have no idea whether I’ll survive it or not. I’m not even sure whether it was a good idea or not. It was a crazy one, that’s for sure, but only time will tell if it was a good one.

I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo.

Yes, I’m going to attempt to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I have a vague plotline in my head, which is a good thing, but whether I’ll be able to do it… well, that’s another matter. Fanfiction will most likely take a back burner while I participate, so I doubt you’ll see anything new that’s Narnia-related for a while. However, I will keep things updated on my NaNoWriMo progress as best as I can.

This is gonna be a bumpy ride… we’ll see what happens!
